Procedure & Uses

The capsule enteroscopy procedure involves the ingestion of a small, vitamin sized video capsule in order to examine the entire small intestine. This small pill has its own light source and camera that travels through your body during an eight-hour long examination period. During this time, it sends pictures to a data recorder for viewing on a video monitor. We can also investigate these further.

Capsule enteroscopy can be used to determine the cause of many ailments, including:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain
  • Recurrent diarrhea
  • Persistent bleeding or anemia
  • Crohn’s disease in the small intestine

Why Is Capsule Enteroscopy Necessary?

This method is very effective in evaluating the small intestine in chronic gastrointestinal diseases, as well as the cause of bleeding from the small intestine. If you have ulcers, tumors, polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease in your small intestine, this procedure provides us with helpful information so that we can begin treatment. Capsule enteroscopy can help us diagnose a number of conditions, including angiodysplasias, small intestinal tumors, and intestinal cancer.

There are a few reasons that your doctor may recommend this procedure, including when you have persistent bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract with negative results on your previous tests, an abnormal x-ray of your small intestine, persistent abdominal pain, or the presence of certain chronic conditions.
