Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy Procedures (EGD) in NJ

Do you suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, ulcers, tumors, or gastrointestinal bleeding? If so, we may recommend an upper endoscopy to get to the bottom of your digestive problems. We may also use this procedure to confirm the diagnosis of stomach cancer or esophageal cancer in our patients if an abnormality was found earlier on an x-ray.

Why Do I Need an Upper Endoscopy & What Can I Expect?

The upper GI endoscopy uses a long, thin tube with a light and camera to investigate the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach, the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), and the esophagus. With the help of the tube and camera, we are able to expertly guide the scope during the procedure and take pictures if necessary to evaluate and diagnose related problems.

The upper endoscopy can be performed for many different reasons, including:

  • To detect abnormalities in the esophagus
  • To detect abnormalities in the stomach
  • To detect abnormalities in the duodenum
  • To evaluate the condition of the duodenum after surgery
  • To evaluate the condition of the stomach after surgery
  • To remove polyps or remove obstructions
  • To stop internal bleeding or widen narrow passages

In the upper endoscopy procedure, we will be on the lookout for any inflammation, infection, bleeding, ulcers, or tumors. If we spot anything questionable, we can remove a polyp or take a tissue sample in order to perform a more in-depth investigation. These problems may not show up on an x-ray, which is why it is so important to have this procedure if you suspect any issues in your esophagus or the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.
