Colonoscopy Procedures

Highly Trained Board Certified Gastroenterologists in NJ

If you have been experiencing problems with your colon such as constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or rectal bleeding, it may be time to seek medical attention. A colonoscopy is a very common and proven procedure which is used for diagnostic and treatment purposes.

What Happens During a Colonoscopy?

Using a very small tube called an endoscope, gastroenterologists at Gastromed Healthcare, P.A. examine the lower half of the gastrointestinal tract (including your colon, large intestine, and your bowels) for any unusual signs. If we find any potential issues during the colonoscopy, we may remove a small tissue sample or polyps to do further tests or to treat problems.

A colonoscopy is also effective in checking for colon cancer, which you should be screened for regularly. During this time we may also take a tissue sample for a biopsy, or cells for a cytology test, to distinguish between a malignant or a benign condition.

The colonoscopy examination can be used to identify the following problems:

  • Ulcers
  • Inflamed tissue
  • Polyps
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Tumors
  • Narrow colon

With extensive training, years of experience specializing in gastroenterology, and a passion for helping our patients, you can rest assured that you are in competent hands.

Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

In order to ensure that the procedure is effective and produces the most accurate results, you will need to take medicine the night before your colonoscopy and keep to a liquids-only diet the entire day before your procedure. If you have any medical problems or are currently taking any medications or supplements, it is important to let our team know beforehand. We can thoroughly explain all of the necessary information to you during your initial appointment.
